Who is St. Paul? Is he the first Christian mystic? Paul is the man who spread Christianity throughout the first-century Mediterranean world. He was Saul of Tarsus (present-day Turkey), a devout Jew who first persecuted followers of Jesus, then changed his way of being after a mystical experience on the road to Damascus, and encouraged others to follow “The Way.” If Jesus was the founder, Paul was the architect of Christianity through his teaching, letters, church planting, and church tending. Having just returned on October 11th from a pilgrimage in the footsteps of St. Paul through Turkey and Greece, Betsy Perry will share some of the sights, insights, and questions that remain about St. Paul. As Richard Rohr has written, Paul is “probably one of the most misunderstood ... teachers in the Church.” We’ll explore some of these misunderstandings through the writings of Rohr, Marcus Borg, and John Dominic Crossan. Come with an open mind and your questions about St. Paul. He might even have some teachings that would help us today as we face the divisions and challenges of our current religious and political systems much as he faced in the first generation of Christians.
